If you've been thinking about joining the Best You If you've been thinking about joining the Best You Plan that starts on Monday, this might give you a better picture into why I created the program, a thought I've shared before: 

Many of you started following me because of my Best You Plan or because you knew I’ve helped a friend or family with their health/ weight struggles. I thank you for being here! Before I go on, please understand that weight loss doesn’t increase our value as humans, it doesn’t solve all problems, nor should we believe that life will suddenly be butterflies and rainbows if we choose to go on a journey to lose weight. 

I stand solid and rooted with what I believe as a registered dietitian: the message that overweight and obesity status is simply because people are not “eating less and exercising more” is the wrong message. We have known in the literature for over 100 years that the calorie concept of weight loss is not the full picture, but we just keep saying it. Shoot, it’s easier to blame the patient than to ask ourselves if we are providing the wrong information. Just because someone at a normal weight can lose 5 or 10 pounds by exercising a little more and eating more salad DOES NOT MEAN that approach works the same in an obese or overweight person. I understand this first-hand. 

Just cutting people’s calories low makes them: cold, cranky, and exhausted. Fasting and reducing processed carbohydrates and sugars is hormonally different than just low calorie dieting. 

This whole issue is rooted in hormonal imbalances, namely insulin resistance. One of the steps that works best is intermittent fasting (and in some cases, extended fasting) coupled with diet changes like eliminating sugar and processed carbohydrates. Reducing snacking/grazing and just eating full meals is another step in the right direction to help someone struggling with elevated insulin levels.

2020 had been hard on a lot of us, but I'm hoping 2020 had been hard on a lot of us, but I'm hoping and praying 2021 is full of goodness.

Did you find that with the stress of 2020 you slipped back into some less than healthy eating habits? Maybe sugars and processed foods became a regular occurrence. Listen, as always, no shame around food choices, but I'm guessing you know sugar foods don't help you feel your best.

With 2 little girls and a new baby, I've found myself eating many meals in a hurry, many times just shoveling the food into my face out of the pan 😅

It got me thinking about perfectionism in the nutrition world. One of the "rules" being to sit down at the table for your meals and chew slowly, allowing proper digestion to take place. But there are many meals I don't have time for that in this infant season. 

Maybe you've been in a similar season where you are eating on the go a lot? Or shoveling food into your face just like me 😬

My point here is we can't expect perfectionism. It's unattainable. It's a forever moving target we will never hit. We have to find what works for us in the season of life we are in and do our best. I can still whip up some quick and healthy food (eggs are a go to) then eat (shovel) them quickly. Our goal is to be nourished and feel good.
